HUNGARIAN EYE

The Hungarian Eye section has a considerable tradition at Budapest Classics Film Marathon. The 2022 programme, which each year presents the cream of the famous Hungarian cinematographer school, also celebrates two masters of the art marking milestone anniversaries. Ferenc Szécsényi would have been 100 this year, and István Eiben 120. Their movies are joined by those of János Kende and István Hildebrand, and we also pay tribute to János Tóth. Of the many cinematographers who went on to glittering international careers, last year we put the spotlight on the art of Vilmos Zsigmond, while this year it is the turn of his friend and colleague, László Kovács, who similarly shot to global recognition in Hollywood. Through his films we examine his relationship with ‘New Hollywood’ and we also screen a documentary about his important career.
