Ariane and her private detective father live in Paris. The girl often flicks through her father’s documents, a large part of which are taken up with the affairs of an American playboy businessman, Mr. Flanagan. When the husband of the American’s latest conquest leaves the agency gun in hand and determined to shoot Flanagan, the girl feels she must do something to avert tragedy. The scheme succeeds but the girl falls under the spell of the louche magnate, and since she knows her affections will not be returned, she prefers to take up the role of the cool femme fatale. The film sets were designed by Alexandre Trauner, master of the ‘Parisian effect’. An earlier film version of the story, Ariane (Paul Czinner, 1931), was screened at the 2021 Budapest Classics Film Marathon.
