Pál Sándor

Hungarian director, screenwriter, producer born in 1939 in Budapest. After his internship at MAFILM, the state-owned Hungarian film studio, he graduated in 1964 as a director from the Academy of Drama and Film (Budapest). At the beginning of his career at MAFILM he became a member of the Balázs Béla Studio.  

He started directing in the mid-60’s, his first feature film Clowns on the Wall (Bohóc a falon) debuted in 1967 and made him a pioneer in Hungarian cinema with the first film focusing on teenagers who couldn’t find their identity and their role in society. A Strange Role (Herkulesfürdői emlék) was awarded a Silver Bear at the Berlinale in 1977.  

During his six decades career he worked on nearly 40 film productions as director, screenwriter or producer. He was the leading producer of János Szász’ Karlovy Vary Crystal Globe winner Le Grand Cahier / The Notebook (A nagy füzet).  

His latest feature film, The Troupe (Vándorszínészek) debuted in 2018 and won the Golden Aphrodite main prize at the Varna IFF.  

For his work he received multiple awards including Balázs Béla Prize (1972), Kossuth Prize (2009) and Prima Primissima Prize (2015).
