The revolt had already been quashed. The rebels were scattered taking refuge, hiding and cut off from one another; those who could have fled. The Guards combed the area making a house-to-house search. They shot everybody they thought to be suspicious. They had suppressed the rising with excessive violence. In the course of the battle the houses in entire districts had been renderered uninhabitable. In one of these houses a civilian and a rebel were hiding.
